The club's genesis was in early 1965 when Trevor Levy, Charles Hodson and Malcolm Bottomley met to discuss the formation of a club in Tawa.

On May 11, 1965, a public meeting was held, and the club was formed. About 70 people turned up, and most joined that evening, each paying £5.

Levy went to mayor Mervyn Kemp and asked about the opportunity to build a facility. Kemp responded: "You build it, I'll provide the land."

The club was opened in 1967. Kemp hit the first ball, and then John Isaacs, the leading Wellington player and national champion Don Burmeister, played an exhibition match.

A much-needed third court was added in 1974, along with extensions to the lounge upgraded in 2006. A fourth court opened to support the membership growth in 2022. 

The Tawa Squash Club has well over 300 members, ranging from complete beginners to New Zealand representatives.
